You're Not Yourself When You're Hungry

There are a voluminous amount of memorable persuasive ads created. However, the most memorable and persuasive ads to me is the Snickers commercial by Mars Inc. In the Snickers commercial, Mars Inc. focuses on persuading the general public to eat Snickers to satisfy their hungry through the use of wits and humor, simple solutions, and celebrities. The exigence of this ad is a fact yet interesting. If you are hungry you are short tempered, however, if you eat Snickers chances of becoming satisfied are extremely high. As result to being satisfied, you are more likely to be placid. According to Jared Grogan, "it is in thinking deeply about why such a commonplace ad is persuasive, that we can learn about what appeals to many of us most, and almost everyday."

There are three techniques used to ameliorate Snickers' ads. First technique that is used is wits and humor, they use their slogan to make their commercials funny and memorable. In general, a bad commercial is a bad commercial unless the ending is memorable. A great ending is enables an individual to condone the beginning and the middle of "something", which in this case is the Snickers commercial. However, not all Snickers commercial apply to what I previously stated because the Youtube video above is quite amusing. The second technique is simple solutions , it is true that when you are hungry you are not yourself because you tend to be more aggressive and short tempered. In addition, by eating a candy bar that has a combination of chocolate, caramel, and peanuts (Snickers) will help you release endorphins and will put you in a better mood. More importantly, it may not be a good choice when it comes to health wise but it does satisfy your hunger. Third technique is the use of celebrities, Mars Inc. used famous celebrities to make Snickers commercial astonishing. Some of the famous celebrities that was used in their commercials were Betty White who is famous for being an actress/comedian. Don Rickles, famous for insult comic was also used in one of the commercials. Joe Pesci was another celebrity that Mars Inc. used in their Snickers commercial, who is famous for being a comedian and along with "Home Alone".

The Youtube video above shows that the young man was not himself when he is hungry by looking really old. Also, as an old man he had troubles of riding the dirt bike. After eating a Snickers, he then goes back to being youthful. As for the image below the Youtube video, Mr. T is promoting the Snickers by using his necklace to do the talking as well as having an intimidating facial expression. Not only Mr. T but other celebrities that I previously stated are helping to promote Snickers as well. Having celebrities to promote Snickers is very effective especially today. Since teens are highly influenced by celebrities, they want to be just like them in a way. For example, Mr. T is telling the viewers to try Snickers and Mr. T is well known. In addition, Betty White is also telling the viewers to do the same as well. The second Youtube video shows that the young man is hungry while playing football. Due to being hungry, he was not himself and he is seen as an old lady (Betty White) who is barely able to keep up in the game. After eating Snickers, he was himself again.

Snickers became such a successful selling snack that others would make a meme about Snickers or something similar to Snickers' slogan of "You're Not Yourself When You're Hungry". A meme can either be a troll or a serious message/statement. The term troll in this case has a meaning completely different from the troll meaning "a mythical, cave-dwelling being" according to Oxford Dictionary. The term troll in this case means "one who posts a deliberately provocative message to a newsgroup or message board with the intention of causing maximum disruption and argument" according to Urban Dictionary. Snickers memes soon became a trend due to the fact that memes are popular itself and just about everyone in all ages uses memes or creates their own memes. Don't believe me? Lets look at some memes then.

Caution: Please be advised that some images below may be disturbing to some viewers.

The first meme appears to feature a young African lady stating that someone needs to hold her Snickers bar. There are two things that makes this meme hilarious and lucid. Without one of the two, the meme is rather enigmatic. First, this meme is hilarious due the use of the word "Snickers" because the word disguises the Snickers slogan of "you're not yourself when you're hungry." Second, the facial expression created by the young lady is priceless and very humorous.

Looking at the memes above, one of them features Heath Ledger who is well-known for playing as Joker from "The Dark Knight". Ledger alone is humorous because of the way he plays the role as Joker from "The Dark Knight". For those who have seen the movie, they are able to picture Joker doing gestures while saying "throw a Snickers bar in a pool and everybody loses their minds" in his (Joker) voice.

The last two memes are different in a way since, one of the two focuses on the slogan and the other being humorous and coherent. The meme featuring Hulk from the movie "Hulk" and Yoda from "Star Wars" deals with the slogan of Snickers rather than being humorous. Reason being, Hulk is normally seen and remembered with an angry characteristic. Whereas, Yoda being calm and intelligent. As for the meme featuring a sloth and a young women, it is humorous and coherent rather than focusing on the slogan itself as I previously stated. The sloth asks the young women if she likes nuts. After asking the question, the sloth then says "cuas ur bout to get some nuts." One, the meme is humorous because it is a troll picture and the fact that a sloth is talking to the young women with a funny expression. Also, the sloth used the term "nuts" in the form of connotation rather than denotation. Second, it is coherent because one of the ingredients of Snickers are peanuts.

Humor works extremely well with advertisements because it causes people to pay attention. Majority are likely to be entertain through the use of humor rather than facts or serious openings. Also, chances of remembering an advertisement is very high. "A humorous ad will get people's attention and enhance affection for the brand" stated Nigel Hollis. Successful humorous advertisements can cause various things such as sharing them to your friends, remembering by heart, and "even if you have seen them before you would probably be happy to watch most of those ads again" (Hollis). Therefore, humor works extremely well with advertisement as well as being a powerful tool catching the viewers' attention.

While persuading the viewers through the use of various techniques, the advertisement itself is a fact yet interesting because you are not yourself when you are hungry. Also, from a simple and humorous commercial, viewers created memes for Snickers which soon became a trend. In conclusion, all of the videos, images, and memes above are hard evidence of Snickers becoming popular due to having a very successful, humorous, and persuasive advertisement.
